I think it happened because AI removed a lot of friction. Instead of searching through ten websites or figuring something out yourself, you can just ask a question and get an answer in seconds.

It’s basically the same reason people became reliant on Google, smartphones, and GPS. The concern is when convenience turns into dependence and people stop thinking or checking things for themselves.
