How Do I Know When It’s Time to Go to a Mental Hospital?

A good rule is to look at safety and daily functioning, not just how bad you feel. If you think you might hurt yourself or someone else, you can’t keep yourself safe, you’re losing touch with reality, or you can’t eat, sleep, care for yourself, or function normally, it’s time to get urgent help.

You don’t have to wait until things become extreme. If you’re unsure, tell a doctor, therapist, trusted person, or emergency service exactly what’s happening. They can help decide whether you need a hospital, urgent treatment, or regular support.

Going to a hospital isn’t a failure. Sometimes getting somewhere safe for a while is the smartest thing you can do.
