How Much of an Emergency Fund is too Much?

I think an emergency fund should cover the problems you can realistically face, not be as big as possible. For many people, a few months of basic expenses is a reasonable starting point.

Keeping more can make sense if your income is unstable, you have dependents, or you expect a big expense soon. But if you keep a very large amount in cash for years, you may miss the chance to use some of that money for other goals.

The right amount depends on your job, expenses, debt, and how quickly you could get help if something went wrong. Once the fund feels comfortable, extra money can usually have a better purpose than just sitting there.
